How to write a student resume

For school and university students: coursework, projects, volunteering and part-time work, arranged so they read as experience.

Student resumes are short by necessity. The advantage is that a reader expects it — so you can be selective without it looking thin.

What counts as experience

  • Class projects with a defined problem and your own contribution
  • Society or club roles with real responsibility — budgets, events, recruitment
  • Part-time and holiday work, described by what you improved
  • Volunteering with measurable scope
  • Self-directed work: open source, writing, competitions

One page, always

Everything a student has fits on one page. Two pages of padding reads worse than one tight page.

Dates and honesty

Give expected graduation dates. If a project was group work, say what you did — vague group claims are the fastest way to lose an interviewer's trust.
