CV Builder — longer academic and professional CVs

Build a complete CV with publications, research, teaching, grants and coursework. Longer formats for academic, medical and senior professional roles.

A CV is a record rather than a pitch. Where a resume argues for one role, a CV lists the whole trail: degrees, publications, research, teaching, grants, talks and service. Use this builder when the posting asks for a CV, when you are applying to academia, medicine, research or public sector roles that expect one, or when you simply have too much for two pages.

What the CV builder includes that a resume builder does not

  • Publications with publisher, date, URL and a short annotation
  • Research entries with institution, role and date ranges
  • Courses, teaching and curriculum responsibilities
  • A dedicated Academic CV and Research CV template that front-load publications
  • Comfortable three-page-plus output with sensible page-break behaviour

Resume or CV — which one?

  • United States and Canada: a resume is the norm for most industry roles; a CV is expected for academic, research, medical and grant applications.
  • United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, France and much of Europe: the document is usually called a CV and can run to two or more pages.
  • India, South Africa and much of Asia: CV and resume are often used interchangeably, with length following seniority.
  • Everywhere: follow the wording of the posting. If it says CV, send a CV.

This is general career guidance, not hiring or legal advice. Expectations vary by institution, seniority and field.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

How long should a CV be?

There is no fixed limit. Early-career CVs are often three to four pages; senior academic CVs regularly run past ten. Stop when every remaining entry still earns its place.

Should I tailor my CV per application?

Yes. Reorder so the most relevant work sits at the top, and mirror the language of the posting where it is genuinely accurate.

Can I export a CV as DOCX?

Yes. Use the Word export for editing, and PDF for sending — PDF preserves pagination and typography exactly.
